OK, so I got a new laptop and we want to use the old computer for networking files. How?
My whole family is into music, but the thing is that we have our entire music collection scattered on all of the computers. We're working on putting them all on the old one (it has an 80 gb hard drive and windows xp, I just needed a laptop), but we want to be able to listen to music that's on the computer through our home network. It would basically be like sharing a drive, but only part of it. I went to best buy to see what can be done and to get something else nonrelated to this and the guy there said it's built into windows xp to be able to do that. I looked in the help and support section, but it's not working on any of our computers. we have file and printer sharing enabled and the songs show up as files in windows explorer, but won't play in any jukebox programs (Windows Media Player, etc.). Is there something that I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance for the answers.

What you need to do is set up a network and then share the folders that contain the files you want to share.
To set up a network in XP you go to "My Network Places" and choose "Set up a home or small office network" on the left side and follow the wizard through.
Then after all the computers are set up you now go to the directory that needs to be shared and right click on the folder and go to properties. From here choose the sharing tab and choose to share the folder and give it a name.
Now you can either map the drive by right clicking on "My Computer" then go to map network drive. Give the drive a letter and the path. Or if you go to My network places again the shared directory(s) will show up there and you can access them from there.
Then go to whatever media player you are using and add the folder to the library. (normally under the file option)
If you just want to use it for sharing music throughout the network, the easiest way is to use Itunes from Apple. It allows you to do this over the network. It sets itself up and works great.
Greetings!
Simple. Run the home network wizard. It will prompt you to copy to disc. Run it on the other computer and you will be in sync. In the storage computer simply share the files, folders or drives you wish to access. You might also share a printer.
Good Luck
