How to learn how to sing?

i am a horrible singer,
but i want to learn at least a little bit, so i wont be embarrassed in front of my friends.
i guess i dont have a talent... but can you learn how to sing?
what should i do?
i cannot afford singing classes right now...but perhaps learning an instrument will help?
but in general i just want to learn how to sing better.
